Black Women: The Main Characters of History and Today
Black women have always been the main characters in the story of this country, from as far back as slavery to the present day. Historically, black women were used as breeders and free labor, deprived of autonomy over their bodies and likeness. Today, in 2024, we recognize that black women are not mere supporting characters; they are the main characters in their own right.
From nurturing and breastfeeding children who weren’t theirs during slavery to now witnessing black women's depictions on social media by black men, men, and others worldwide, it is evident that black women are central figures. While the world may be laughing, black women are excelling in education. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, black women are among the most educated groups in America. They are awakening and choosing themselves over patriarchal systems, using their voices to advocate for themselves and their communities.
Despite the ongoing conversations about black women's behavior and accountability, there's a pervasive gaslighting that overlooks their contributions. Black women have always been at the forefront, whether it’s through the appropriation of their style, hair, and fashion or the colonization of their sacred rituals like skincare and butters, now sold on platforms like Amazon with significant markups.
While many mimic and go viral for adopting black women's culture, it’s clear they are the trendsetters. Every day, black women are discussed on the internet, whether it’s for their Afrocentric features, hair texture, melanin, attitude, or choices in love. They are constantly told to "choose better" while men in their community aren’t held accountable.
Black women's advocacy and leadership have been monumental throughout history. From their role in the Underground Railroad to icons like Rosa Parks, their impact is undeniable. Black women have always been, and continue to be, the main characters in our world.
