Black Women In Media Does it Again— With Another Star-Studded Event Honoring Women In Music
Black Women In Media (BWIM) was created in 2014 by Founder & CEO Judith Jacques-Laguerre. She felt a need for representation, and she made a community that supports women who dominate Communications, Media, Entertainment, Literature + Publishing, TV & Film, Digital + Tech, Radio + Broadcast, and much more.
Black Women In Media hosts annual awards and conferences, gathering thousands of women and providing awe-inspiring experiences. The Conference comprises 30+ panels, workshops, and keynote speakers, and their awards ceremony concludes some of the biggest names in Media, Communications, and Entertainment.
On Feb 3, 2023, another star-studded event celebrating Women in music was hosted by #BWIM, and Bacon Magazine was on hand to document the experience.
The celebration for Women In Music was sponsored by TVOne, BET & Pronghorn. Issa Rae's- Hill Top Coffee & Kitchen, Ten To One, Tequila With Friends, and Reel Mood also partnered.
Black women honorees were recognized within the Entertainment industry-- including artists, executives, and of course, Grammy nominees artists (past & present) such as Xscape, Rapsody, Candace Wakefield, and Shanice, to name a few.
The red carpet was flooded with stars and honorees such as Coco Jones, Nicci Gilbert, Brownstone, Elise Neal, Joe Torry, Sufe Bradshaw, Kimberly Williams, Tallie Spencer, Young Lawless, and Melissa L. Williams, who stars in Tyler Perry's Ruthless series alongside Alise Willis. Our girl Zatima & Sistas star Crystal Hayslett warmed up the carpet with her embracive demeanor and welcoming smile, and I see you, sis; I got you, sister, energy (she's a total vibe).
Love & Hip Hop producer Mona Scott Young stepped on the red carpet followed by Amina Buddafly, the sweet and witty Masika Kalisha, and her beautiful baby girl all made an appearance and positive impression on the red carpet, along with many other stars.
The show opened with French-born soul singer Kayden Wanet singing The Black National Anthem. Baby girl was giving voice, legs, fro, and star power as she kick-started the festivities!
Dj Honey did her thing on the ones and twos and kept the show strong on the award stage.
Amina butterfly later serenaded the audience with a new original song, sung acoustic, called #MakeMeC*m, and 5x time Grammy award winner Candace Wakefield dominated the stage singing original bangers, including a song titled #hallelujah.
Chaz Lamar Shepherd shocked the crowd when he took center stage, accepted his honor, played the keys, and sang the hell out of D'Angelo's how it feels! I'm talking falsettos, octaves, range—pure talent. Aside from leaving the microphone in shambles (in a good way), Chaz was a significant personality on the red carpet, even giving Bacon Magazine a little Twerkulator action.
The 125 Collection #BlackBuy Experience was a complete success for Black Women In Media, Vendors, Honorees, Talent, and media.
The room's sophistication was deliberate, featuring a floral stage and rows of red roses at the end of each aisle near the main stage. The arrangement was intended to honor the honorees for their impact on music and culture—the venture held 3 DJs, including DJ Honey, DJ AB Flashh, and DJ Stakz, who all kept the coward vibing and having fun.
Nicci Gilbert was honored and made a beautiful speech as her sisters, R&B members of #brownstone, cheered her with smiles, laughs, and love. Legend Rapsody appeared as an honoree and thanked "everyone who ever saw themselves in her music."
Vendors provided breathtaking experiences and offerings throughout the venue with food by Chef Sommer, wine, drinks, skin, and hair care products showcasing Black-owned businesses and communities. Cool As*Black Woman, Taomi Tea N Treats, Pur Noire Urban Wineries, She Wines, Poised Wines, Mayfield Glow, Julien Interiors, and Ziggy Inspired were in the building selling their services and goods and networking was on 10!
Media outlets from BET Plus, TV One, The Official Black Magazine, and yours truly (BACON) interviewed talent coming and leaving the carpet, and we met a few new friends and Women In Business like #RaeTheBae#TheHollywoodWingWoman and #BriFromTheIE.
Judith Jacques (CEO, #BWIM) closed the event with a few words of gratitude before introducing Shanice as the final honoree of the evening.
Shanice made her way to the stage and graciously accepted her flowers, and the night was golden for all in attendance.
The Black Women In Media Team excelled in creating an atmosphere of excitement, providing attendees with networking connections and swag bags to remember the event by.
Anticipation is building for their next remarkable endeavor.
