In 2024, the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC) significantly expanded its Acres Program, which focuses on empowering Black farmers. This initiative, titled "Acres: Cultivating Equity in Black Agriculture," entered its second year with a cohort that was triple the size of its inaugural group, including over 30 Black farmers and ranchers from various parts of the United States.

The primary objective of the Acres program is to train and certify Black farmers and ranchers as diverse suppliers, enhancing their ability to access new markets like commodities, grocery stores, restaurants, and other retail outlets. This expansion is aimed at increasing their income and establishing a more inclusive and sustainable food supply chain. The program participants engage in a 12-week learning curriculum, developed in partnership with the Southern University Ag Center, to enhance their capacity for handling major national contracts with NMSDC corporate members. After completing the program, participants receive assistance in obtaining Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) certification, further empowering them in their business endeavors.

This initiative is part of NMSDC's broader efforts to address disparities faced by Black businesses and contribute to the development of a more equitable and diverse agricultural sector. The program not only represents the rich diversity and potential of the Black agricultural community but also signifies a significant step towards correcting unequal access to wealth-building opportunities in the realm of agriculture.
